HKU: Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd

An interactive ghost-hunting experience on location, driven by GPS and NFC/QR codes.

The challenge

Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd, a historic estate near Utrecht, wanted to offer visitors something more than an audio tour. The goal: an interactive ghost-hunting experience that sends visitors exploring its grounds, phone in hand.

The approach

I built a location-aware web experience that turns the estate into a playing field.

  • GPS positioning guides visitors across the grounds and triggers events at the right spots
  • NFC tags and QR codes hidden across the grounds unlock story fragments and clues
  • Three.js renders the ghostly apparitions and atmospheric effects in the browser
  • Built as a web app, so visitors play instantly with no app store and no installation

The result

An interactive experience playable whether the house is open or closed. Visitors hunt, scan, and discover their way through an intriguing story that entices them to step inside during open hours. The project demonstrates how far web browsers can be pushed as a platform for on-location interactive storytelling.
